In May 2020, FDH Financial Holdings donated medical equipment worth MK3.2 million to Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) in support of the care provider’s efforts against the Covid-19 pandemic.

At a handover which took place at the Blantyre DHO premises, Kawawa Msapato, FDH Bank’s Head of Personal and Business Banking, announced that the donation was made in recognition of the vital role played by the DHO in efforts to test, track and treat Malawian individuals who had contracted the Covid-19 virus.

Mr Msapato explained that the MK3.2 million relief package included vital medical equipment — including masks, surgical gloves and thermometers — to help keep medical personnel safe in the course of their duties.

Kawawa Msapato pointed out that staff within the health sector are at the front line in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. He explained that FDH Bank recognises health care officials need support from various different stakeholders, underlining the importance of the government and private sector working together.

Mr Msapato confirmed that FDH Bank was committed to playing its part in helping the nation to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commending FDH Bank for its generous donation, Gift Kawalazila, Blantyre’s District Director of Health and Social Services, said that the gift would protect the safety of health workers in the field, bolstering Blantyre DHO’s Covid-19 containment efforts.

In May 2020, Blantyre DHO commenced screening of health workers for Covid-19 as part of measures to protect employee safety. Gift Kawalazila explained that the measure started with health care workers who had been screening travellers since January and all who had previously worked at Kameza isolation centre.

Mr Kawalazila confirmed that, out of 82 health workers screened to date, five had tested positive for Covid-19. All were reportedly in good health, and hopes were high that they would recover without symptoms following a period of self-isolation.

Gift Kawalazila pointed out that it was a top priority of Blantyre DHO to reorganise work schedules, as well as creating staff isolation and quarantine centres. He said that the organisation planned to implement 14-day work, 14-day quarantine, and 14-day break shift patterns, to ensure that health workers could spend time with their families, whilst at the same time containing the virus.
